Arm-of-the-Sea Theater will present its annual outdoor performance spectacle The Esopus Creek Puppet Suite in Saugerties on August 15th and 16th. Drawing from literature, history, biology and contemporary events, the Puppet Suite fuses visual enchantment with live music in a unique form of indigenous drama. Following the Suite is a cabaret of small shows by regional artists, including Amy Trompetter's Blackbird Theater and Carl Welden of Dances With Werewolves fame.
This year's Puppet Suite is an homage to the Hudson River Estuary. Arm-of-the-Sea artistic director Marlena Marallo created the visual elements for the show, which features original music by Dean Jones and Dennis Yerry. Animating the mask and puppet characters will be veteran performers Carl Welden, Dale Gibbons and Patrick Wadden. A special contingent of local volunteers will supply extra pomp and pageantry.
This is Arm-of-the-Sea's twenty-sixth season of presenting contemporary visual theater. The Ulster county-based company tours productions throughout the Northeast and Midwest. Recent credits include performances at the Detroit Festival of the Arts, NYC's Central Park and the Clearwater Festival. Each summer the company creates a new Puppet Suite as a special offering for its home region. This year's event has been scheduled to coincide with the local Artists' Studio Tour, making Saugerties the Weekend Arts Destination in the Hudson Valley.
The 2008 Esopus Creek Puppet Suite will begin at dark at the Tina Chorvas Waterfront Park on East Bridge Street in the village of Saugerties. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children and $25 for whole families. Tickets are available at the park entrance on the evenings of the event. Audience members are encouraged to arrive early and to bring lawn seating. Saugerties is located at Exit 20 on the NYS Thruway. Follow signs to the Waterfront Park. maps.google.com....
