One show, "La Casa De Vida (The House of Life)," was about the continuous cycling of nutrients within eco-systems. The other, "El Cayuco Rojo (The Red Dugout Canoe)" told the story of a fisherman and a sea turtle. Following the mini tour in the Bocas region, the group traveled to Panama City to participate in a cultural festival at The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute's Marine Education Center at Punta Culebra. Summer Residency: The Newburgh Peace Project
Arm-of-the-Sea artists took part in a five-week inner city arts workshop this summer in Newburgh, NY, in which a diverse group of teenagers and adults explored issues that divided and united us all. Musicians Joakim Lartey and Jamiles Lartey together with director Patrick Wadden helped the group transform its far ranging discussions into shapes, sounds, colors, motions, and a story line. Slowly, over the course of many sultry nights, a play took form.
As Sophia Woods, the project's founder and indefatigable catalyst, put it: "We came together, mostly as total strangers, with a longing in our hearts to escape the barbed wire boundaries of class, race, and religion to sit united at one table. We asked ourselves: How can we help young people to experience peace and to choose it over violence? All of us live in or near Newburgh. Many of us are distraught by its poverty and violence. We wanted an outlet for all our urgings to make it better and to create some new thing. We thought: Let's have a summer program right in the broken heart of Newburgh and work for peace, starting with ourselves and our city. We began to make plans with Arm-of-the-Sea. We discovered it was like putting an artists' colony on an active volcano."
This initial experiment culminated in a powerful, moving performance to a standing-room-only audience at the Ritz Theater Lobby. If you would be interested in being involved with future efforts of the Newburgh Peace Project please contact us.

Our 2007 Esopus Creek Puppet Suite: The Illuminated Manuscripts of Rip Van Wrinkle
Over a thousand people came out for this year's Puppet Suite, which was presented Aug. 24 and 25 at Tina Chorvas Waterfront Park in the village of Saugerties, NY.
This year's Suite featured that quintessential Catskill dreamer Rip Van Wrinkle in a magical mystery tale that dove into the Deep Time of evolutionary history. Animating the mask and puppet characters were veteran performers Steve Thomas, Carl Welden, Trey Daniels, Elisa Tucci and Joel Mirante together with new recruits Brook Celeste, Jahson, Courtney Stryker, Eric Schmidt, and Andre Stoltzfus.
Composer Dean Jones created this year's score and directed The Big Sky Ensemble. The group features musical luminaries Thomas Workman on sousaphone, Brian Farmer on percussion, Bill Ylitalo on baritone saxophone & flutes, Peter Buettner on tenor sax, Tim Allen on African drums and Mr. Jones on trombone. In addition their musical duties, band members seamlessly handled the character voice-overs.
Following the Suite were two special cabaret performances. The first was "The Crone Chronicles, Episode #13" by Grian MacGregor. The second was "Moonrise" by Gnomon Shadow Theater. Lighthouse TV, the local public access channel, recorded one performance of the '07 Puppet Suite and is in the process of editing it for broadcast. A DVD of the project will be available later this season.
Program notes from the '07 Esopus Creek Puppet Suite: Every culture has a story about how life began and how the present generation is related through kinship lines to the Original Ones. In this spirit, we draw our production from that most essential miracle & mystery play: the Evolution of Life on Earth. Reinventing that hapless hero of Catskill Mountain lore, Rip Van 'Wrinkle', our story dives through the Looking Glass of the microscope and into the sub-visible realm of Bacteria. These one-celled organisms are the original biological pioneers - the Bioneers - who colonized every nook and cranny of Planet Earth. For nearly three billion years of evolutionary history they were the only show in town. As the first Mothers of Invention, they developed all the primary metabolic pathways and survival strategies - from fermentation and decomposition to photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Out of mutual benefit, some microbes merged together, creating a new and far more complex kind of cell that eventually became plants and animals, including us hyperactive humans! So this one's for the Ancestors.

    New Works-in-Progress
Living in the House of Life - A new touring show about evolution, the microbe-management of the planet's life support systems and human economy within this Household. The show is currently in rehearsals and will premier in the Spring.
Mutual Strangers: Henry Hudson & the River That Discovered Him - The working title of a production for our 2009 season, which marks the 400th anniversary of Hudson's voyage up the river that now bears his name. The project is in the initial stages of research and development.

    Autumn Residency Projects
Oakwood Friends School, Poughkeepsie, NY - A workshop production with middle and high school students in a performance of The Great Tablecloth. This performance poem, illustrated with paintings and puppets, was created by AotS in 1988, inspired by the poet Pablo Neruda of Chile.
Clinton School, Poughkeepsie, NY - Building lanterns and processional figures with students for the Celebration of Lights Parade. Sponsored by the Bardavon Opera House.

Festival of Lights with the Vanaver Cararvan
    A special collaboration December 14, 15, and 16
The Vanaver Caravan is a legendary company of dancers and musicians based in Ulster County, NY. The vision of founders / directors Bill & Livia Vanaver, this group of performing artists have been sowing the seeds of beauty, joy and cross-cultural understanding at home and abroad for over 35 years. We are working together with them on an original dance theater piece that will be a special addition to their annual Festival of Lights, a winter solstice event that explores through the arts how people of the world bring light into the darkest time of year.
Arm-of-the-Sea's co-director Patrick Wadden notes, "This partnership combines the dynamic energy of the Caravan together with our ancient devices of visual storytelling. I would predict some beautiful surprises from this dance/music/theater fusion."
Join us Dec. 14, 15 & 16 at SUNY Ulster's Quimby Theater in Stone Ridge, NY, for an evening of luminous entertainment. More details to be posted at our web site.

    Our 2007 Supporters
The New York State Music Fund - Arm-of-the-Sea has been awarded a grant from the NY State Music Fund in support of the live music component of our performances in the 2007 season. The Music Fund is a grant program that increases availability and accessibility of music by contemporary artists to diverse audiences and communities throughout New York State. The Fund was created when the New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer resolved investigations against major recording companies that had violated state and federal laws prohibiting "pay for play" (also called "payola"). The settlement agreement stipulated that funds paid by music businesses would support music education and appreciation for the benefit of New York State residents. Arm-of-the-Sea composers/musicians include: Dean Jones, Thomas Workman, Juan Basilio Sanchez and The Big Sky Ensemble (Brian Farmer, Dean Jones, Tim Allen, Peter Beuttner, Thomas Workman & Bill Ylitalo).
The New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) - A multi-year grant for general operating support from NYSCA's Theater Program enables us to plan our touring season and offer reduced fees to New York State presenters. NYSCA is state agency that awards public funds, i.e. your tax dollars. Arm-of-the-Sea has received this support since 1996.
The Hudson River Improvement Fund (HRIF) - A grant from the HRIF covers the purchase of building materials for an addition to our studio / rehearsal facilities located at Cantine's Island Co-Housing Community. Other grants from HRIF have helped us purchase new lighting and sound systems and our bio-diesel tour bus.
Catskill Watershed Corporation (CWC) - The CWC underwrites performances of City the Drinks the Mountain Sky in the Catskill region and New York City.

  • Spring 2008

    Friends:

Taking a cue from the season, our resilient troupe is back in the saddle and soon to be performing at a public space near you. Perhaps it takes a company of outsider artists to bring you the inside scoop, the dirty lowdown plus a big shot of hope and beauty. Our lively, irrepressible crew of artists includes Carl Welden, Dale Gibbons, Dean Jones, Zoe Rowan, and Jason West. Great audiences make great performances, so come out and see a show. Or, better yet, help sponsor the company for a performance in your community.

In addition to touring, we are in the thick of creating a new production, "Mutual Strangers: Henry Hudson & the River that Discovered Him." This epic tale will open next season as part of the 400th anniversary of Hudson's voyage.

Mark this on your summer calendar: our 2008 Esopus Creek Puppet Suite will be held in Saugerties on Aug 15 & 16, with a raindate Aug 17. This year's theme is "Tributaries & Estuaries" Volunteers are needed to help perform this spectacle. Please contact us for more information.

Our 2008 season is made possible with public funds from the NYS Council on the Arts, a state agency, and by grants from the Jim Henson Foundation, the NYS DEC's Hudson River Estuary Program, the Puffin Foundation, the Hudson River Improvement Fund, the Golub /Price Chopper Foundation along with many individual donors.

With arts budgets shrinking and many of our costs rising, we want to heartily thank our current supporters. Consider making a gift to help keep Arm-of-the-Sea Theater raring and daring to go. • 2009 Esopus Creek Puppet Suite

Arm-of-the-Sea Theater will present its annual outdoor performance spectacle The Esopus Creek Puppet Suite in Saugerties on August 14th and 15th. Drawing from literature, history, ecology and contemporary events, the Puppet Suite fuses visual enchantment with live music in an original form of mask & puppet theatre. This year’s Suite will feature our newest production, "Mutual Strangers: Henry Hudson & the River That Discovered Him" as part of New York’s Quadricentennial celebration. Audiences of many ages and persuasions will find enjoyment in its low-tech immediacy and mythic reach.

Preceding the show on Friday night will be a special performance by the Vanaver Caravan’s Summer Dance on Tour. Following the Suite is a cabaret of small shows by regional artists, including Grian MacGregor’s Crone Chronicles, Saugerties performance artist Linda Montano, Zzoe & Sharon Rowan’s Gnomon Shadow Theater, and Carl Welden of Dances With Werewolves notoriety.

Mutual Strangers is a fictional drama inspired by the events surrounding the 1609 voyage of the Halve Maen (Half Moon) under the command of Henry Hudson. Sent from Europe to find a northern route to the Orient, Hudson & his crew endured storms, ice, and threat of mutiny to eventually sail 150 miles up a river on the “unknown” North American continent. The events that transpired on that river--- the encounters of European sailors and indigenous people, and the information brought back to the Dutch East India Company--- foreshadowed the collision of cultures that would come to shape New York State and a new nation.

Based on the logbook of first mate Robert Juet and from oral traditions of the Lenape and Mohican peoples, the story is a coming-of-age tale of two boys. Teme Gwitet is the grandson of a Mohican sachem (or chief) living on the great river called Maheakanuk. John Hudson is the son of Henry and a crewmember aboard the Half Moon. “We try to convey something of the time period and the complex interactions of First Contact between two peoples through the eyes of these two boys”, notes playwright and director Patrick Wadden. “We found an immense amount of material for this story and have been hewing it down to its essentials over the past month. I think the show will offer a different perspective on the Quadricentennial.”

Arm-of-the-Sea artistic director Marlena Marallo created the large masks, puppet figures and other stunning visual elements. Dean Jones, the company’s music director, along with guest composer Dennis Yerry designed the music and they perform it live while also doing many of the character voices. Mr. Yerry, of Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) ancestry, arranged several traditional songs for the show. Other Native American artists who contributed voiceovers include Meghan Corcoran, Kay Olan, Matoaka Little Eagle and Powhatan Swift Eagle. Animating the dozens of mask and puppet characters are veteran performers Carl Welden, Lily McNamara and Patrick Wadden.

The 2009 Esopus Creek Puppet Suite will begin at 8pm at the Tina Chorvas Waterfront Park on East Bridge Street in the village of Saugerties. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children and $25 for whole families. Tickets are available at the park entrance on the evenings of the event. Audience members are encouraged to arrive early and to bring lawn seating. Saugerties is located at Exit 20 on the NYS Thruway. Follow signs to the Waterfront Park, on East Bridge Street. Our 2009 season featured 85 performances from a repertoire of five productions, the principal show of the year being "Mutual Strangers: Henry Hudson & the River That Discovered Him". We had the honor of working with with a wide range of dedicated arts presenters, including SUNY Purchase Performing Arts Center (Purchase, NY) , Hudson Valley Community College (Troy, NY), Battery Park City Parks (NYC), American Museum of Natural History (NYC), PS 21 (Chatham, NY), Warwick Summer Arts Festival (Warwick, NY), NY Botanical Garden (Bronx, NY)Hammond Museum (North Salem, NY)Roxbury Arts Group (Roxbury, NY) Hudson River Museum (Yonkers, NY) SinterKlaas (Rhinebeck, NY) Tribeca Performing Arts Center (NYC) as well as a number of NY libraries (NYC, Saugerties, Newburgh & Ellenville. In this exceptionally rainy year we only had to cancel three performances due to inclement weather.
In addition, we presented over two dozen performances in area schools and also conducted over 36 days of theater arts residencies at schools and community centers.
