People, Puppets, & Performances

Our 2022 Summer Season featured five original productions in 44 public performances at venues and events throughout the Hudson Valley, Catskills, and NY metro area reaching around 8,000 people. Through partnerships with funders and presenters, a majority of these shows were offered free to the public. They were brought to life by a skilled performance company that includes veterans Soyal Smalls, Trey Daniels and Kira deCoudres, Music Director Eli Winograd, and newcomers Maclain Maier and Dee Dee Maucher.

In August, we christened the new Performance Tent at Arm-of-the-Sea Tidewater Center with KEEP THAT LAMP TRIMMED N’ BURNING, a historic drama centered around the 1866 Saugerties Lighthouse. We also presented this show at the Connecticut Maritime Heritage Festival in New London.

In 2023, our major undertaking will be a new production based on the life and times of the Hudson River Estuary. As many of you may know, Arm-of-the-Sea takes its name from a figure of speech for the Estuary. We hope to have the piece ready to premiere at the Tidewater Center by late summer.

In the coming month, we'll be collaborating with the Vanaver Caravan dancers & musicians on our annual winter spectacle INTO THE LIGHT. We're also conducting several winter residency projects at schools in the area.

Up Next…

In September, we premiered A RIPARIAN RHAPSODY: HOW THE FOREST SINGS TO THE STREAM in Neversink, NY. This project, commissioned by the Neversink/Rondout Stream Program, celebrates the complex web of interactions within Catskill stream corridors.

Arm-of-the-Sea is propelled by creativity and love. We believe in handmade live theater as the antidote to 24/7 electronic media and consumer culture. Here’s our Artistic Director Marlena Marallo in action !
